Print as you go Many experienced scrapbookers mentioned the importance of printing photos. Most of these crafters started scrapbooking back in the “old days” before the advent of digital cameras, when they took rolls of film to be developed. Digital photography completely changed their photo printing process, and many fell years behind in printing. If they could do it all over, some told me they would print photos “as they go”, in the sizes needed for layouts. Others stressed the importance of printing regularly – not only as a safeguard against computer crashes, but also as a motivator for scrapbooking. Nothing inspires a scrapbooker like a freshly printed set of photos!

Invest in a great camera A few scrapbookers I spoke to wish they had invested in a good digital SLR camera, and learned how to use it many years ago. One scrapbooker said she regrets not being able to capture clear, action shots at her child’s sporting events. I agree, although I’ve been able to purchase professional photos from most of my daughter’s important activities. However, I’ve probably spent more on those prints over the years, than I would have on a great camera.

Journal more I know several scrapbookers who included very little journaling on their early pages, and now they regret it. They wish they had taken the time to write the stories which are at the heart of their photos. They’ve learned that the stories are almost as important (if not more so), than the photos themselves. These scrapbookers would advise newbies to make a point of journaling on every page.

I invite you to share this “do over” list with your next class of beginners, and new customers who come into your store. Let them learn from our collective experience! They’ll trust your guidance, and create pages they love, from the first day they start scrapbooking. With luck, there will be no more “Do over!” calls!
