Professor one of only three people to receive prestigious international honour

Professor Gill Marshall from the University is one of only three nominees worldwide to be honoured with a Gold Medal by the Society and College of Radiographers.

The gold medals have been struck in 2010 to commemorate the Society’s 90th anniversary to honour anyone worldwide of any profession for exceptional contributions to radiography, the development of the profession and for the advancement of the Society and College of Radiographers. To be awarded the gold medal, Gill had to be supported by ten members of her professional body and have her outstanding contribution recognised and acclaimed by her peers, with excellence and/or innovation in a minimum of 3 of 9 areas – Gill’s citation was against 6 of the descriptors.

Gill was also awarded a Fellowship of the College of Radiographers in recognition of her outstanding professional contribution earlier this year and will be undertaking her Professorial Inaugural Lecture “From Novice to Expert – My Radiological Journey through Higher Education” on 9 July at the University’s Lancaster campus.

Professor Marshall is Research Development Lead in the Faculty of Health, Medical Sciences and Social Care at the University. She has authored countless peer-reviewed articles, book chapters and presentations on medical imaging and its pedagogy. Gill has achieved an international reputation in the field, playing a significant role in making radiography an academically credible profession within elite educational circles such as the Higher Education Academy. Gill is based on the University’s Lancaster campus and also lives in Lancaster.

“ I am privileged to work with colleagues in an area that remains dynamic and challenging”

Gill said: “I’m very honoured to receive this prestigious recognition of my work, from the Society and College of Radiographers. It was a wonderful surprise to find out I was to be awarded a gold medal, which is rare indeed with the previous gold medals being struck 15 years ago. I never thought I’d achieve this. I’d like to thank my nominees and express my gratitude to my family, friends, colleagues, students and all who have participated in my research. I am privileged to work with colleagues in an area that remains dynamic and challenging”
