Borrow a bike for the summer: available now!
In partnership with Cycling England, Lancaster Cycling Demonstration Town and UCSU, Vélocampus Cumbria has been set up at our Lancaster campus. This includes a bike loan scheme for students. We have already received some of the bikes but they are unlikely to be taken by students before September. So if any member of staff is interested in borrowing one for the summer please visit:
www.cumbria.ac.uk/velocampus The arrangements on the website are described for students but a staff loan would work the same way. The only difference is that the bikes have to be returned by 1 September at the latest so that they can be checked and serviced prior to being loaned to students. The price is fixed at £35 for any period of loan up to the 1 September deadline.
The bikes are available to any member of staff but they have to be picked up from and returned to the Lancaster campus. The scheme is managed by the Students’ Union at Lancaster Campus: please contact Allan Stavert on 6565 to talk it through or to arrange a time to sign a contract and collect a bike.

Inaugural lecture by Professor Gill Marshall
An inaugural lecture by Professor Gill Marshall; Chair in Medical Imaging Education/Senior Fellow and National Teaching Fellow of the Higher Education Academy will take place on Friday 9 July 2010 at the Lancaster campus. The lecture, entitled:
From novice to expert: my radiological journey through higher education
documents Gill’s journey from arrival at St Martin’s College, Lancaster (now University of Cumbria) in 1992 with no experience of teaching in higher education through to and beyond her having a Professorial Chair conferred in 2007, hence from novice to expert. The lecture details her research around medical screening and research into the drugs used to visualise body systems in radiology and also explains her pedagogical research in the field of medical imaging. This research has allowed Gill to contribute to evidence-based medicine in her field and to explore how that knowledge should be conveyed and assessed to help students learn most successfully. It is pitched at a non-subject specialist level with frequent illustration and humour.
The lecture will take place in the Alexandra building on the Lancaster campus. Places are limited due to the capacity of the venue, so if you would like any further information regarding the event please contact:
