Graduate School news!
We are delighted to announce that seven PhD candidates have successfully completed and/or graduated during the current academic year and we have also registered 15 new MPhil/PhD candidates of whom seven are University of Cumbria staff members.
Two of these University colleagues have been accepted by Lancaster University to submit for the award of PhD by Published Work which is excellent news and which may pave the way for more colleagues to progress to PhD via this route.
Nick Cantlay, who is in his third year of research into medical imaging science, recently won first prize for his poster presentation at the 2nd Annual Conference for Health and Social Care Professionals hosted by Chester University in conjunction with Salford University in March of this year. A number of other PGR candidates have also presented their work at external conferences.
The Graduate School continues to provide wide-ranging support for University of Cumbria doctoral candidates, staff engaged in research (or registered for MPhil/PhD elsewhere and novice researchers within the University. Staff development workshops provided by the Graduate School have attracted participants from across all faculties of the University and two new workshops have been developed this year: Effective Doctoral Supervision which has already run at two campuses and The Research Degree Examination Process (forthcoming).
We also run a varied programme of monthly Research Skills Development sessions in Lancaster and Carlisle, advertised via the global email – for further details or to book a place at forthcoming sessions, please contact Sonia Mason:

There has already been a great deal of interest in this year’s Research and Scholarship Fest which is being chaired jointly by Dr Helen Woodruffe-Burton (Director of the Graduate School) and Dr Paul Miller (School of Sport). It is taking place on Friday 9 July 2010 at the Alexandra Building (Lancaster campus) and all are welcome. To submit a paper and/or register to attend the event, please contact Sonia Barnes:

The summer school remains a highlight of the Graduate School calendar and this year will see the second Doctoral Colloquium for our own doctoral candidates and we are pleased to welcome a number of external speakers to these events as well as a number of new faces from our own University of Cumbria staff delivering sessions at the summer school. University staff undertaking doctoral research elsewhere or who may be considering applying to register for a PhD are welcome to attend the summer school by arrangement – please contact Helen Woodruffe-Burton:

The University has been successful in attracting external funding for PhD candidates and currently external sponsors include UKERC, Freshwater Biological Association, Forestry Commission and the NHS. The Graduate School is increasing its external visibility through involvement with a number of external initiatives (including Vitae) and Dr Helen Woodruffe-Burton, Director of the Graduate School, was an invited keynote speaker at a recent UK Council for Graduate Education Conference where she delivered a paper entitled Meeting the needs of part-time postgraduates.
The Graduate School now has a folder on the ‘Z’ drive where information is openly available regarding all aspects of the doctoral programme.
