As I take up the role of Vice Chancellor, I am conscious that the University faces many challenges. Difficult decisions will need to be made over coming weeks and months but a start has been made and I am confident that I will be able to provide the leadership and support needed to ensure that the momentum is maintained.

I am looking forward to meeting with you over the coming weeks to better understand the issues we are facing. I plan to hold a number of staff forums for July so I can meet with many of you and share with you more detailed plans for stabilising the University I realise that there is a lot for me to learn about the University and I am keen to listen to your ideas about what can and should be done to ensure the positive future for the University that we all desire.

We also need to remember that we have a lot to be positive about. Our students and staff continue to deliver great achievements that build on our national and international reputation. Applications to the University continue to rise and the University has risen in the rankings of three national newspapers’ university guides, including a huge leap of 27 places in the Independent’s guide. That is a real achievement for a university founded less than three years ago.

With such good foundations to build on, and working together, I am confident that we can deal with the University’s financial difficulties whilst maintaining the student experience, the quality of our academic programmes and continuing to meet the needs of the communities, which we serve.

Professor Graham Upton, Vice Chancellor
