Trainee art teachers exhibit pupils’ work
Trainee art and design teachers exhibited artwork produced on teaching placement by their pupils, alongside examples of their own work on the Lancaster campus early this month.
It was an exhibition of work that the trainee teachers on their PGCE course (Post Graduate Certificate in Education) completed with secondary school pupils during their two teaching placements. It featured a range of artwork created by pupils aged 11-18, showing a diverse range of techniques, ideas and projects, both in 2D and 3D. The exhibition contained the work of pupils from schools across the whole of Lancashire and Cumbria, including local schools—Ripley St Thomas High School, Heysham High School, Carnforth High School and Lancaster Boys and Girls Grammar Schools.
The trainee teachers also included some of their own artwork alongside that of the pupils to show where ideas for projects have come from. The free exhibition was open to schools and the general public and was of particular interest to children, teachers, and anyone with ambitions of becoming an art and design teacher or simply interested in children’s art work.
The exhibition was held in the Alexandra Building on the Lancaster campus on Tuesday 8 June and Wednesday 9 June 2010. There was also a private viewing on Wednesday 9 June.
Christine Ryan, PGCE Secondary Art & Design course leader, says: “The primary purpose of this exhibition was to celebrate the range of artwork our trainee teachers have achieved in the classroom with their pupils, showing how they’ve been able to encourage and inspire young people with art and design. It’s always very exciting to see what our trainees have done on teaching placement with their pupils and I’m sure this year will be no exception. I’m proud of what they’ve achieved. It reflects not only their potential to be inspiring and innovative art teachers of the future, but also the range of artistic talent that exists amongst young people in our North West schools”

The trainee teachers are graduates who have already gone through the process of doing their degree course and specialised in a particular area of art and design. These areas include fine art, architecture, textiles, 3D work, illustration, film, graphic design and history of art to name just a few. They study the one-year PGCE course to become a secondary school art and design teacher and utilise their art skills and knowledge to teach.
