cadet movement is one of the oldest and most successful voluntary youth organi- sations in the world. It was initially start- ed to help bolster the country’s defence forces following the Crimean War. To- day, the cadet movement comprises the Army Cadet Force, Sea Cadet Corps and Air Training Corps, all of which are com- munity-based, and the Combined Cadet

Force which is based in schools. In total there are 131,000 young people involved, led by 25,000 adult volunteers at well over 3,000 sites across the country. All four organisations are about fun and op- portunity in a positive environment that encourages the development of leadership and teamwork, initiative, self-confidence, self-discipline and self-esteem. They wel- come young people and adults from all backgrounds and abilities with the aim of helping them flourish and enjoy success in their chosen way of life while becom- ing responsible citizens. The 150-year anniversary celebrations
launched on February 17, when patrons Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh wel- comed 26 specially selected cadet am- bassadors to an audience at Buckingham Palace. Members of the Royal Family will also be central to the main national com- memorative event on July 6 when over
1,500 cadets and adult volunteers will parade to the grounds of Buckingham Palace for a garden party. Celebrations are ongoing throughout
the year with events taking place in every corner of the UK and beyond, all reflect- ing the spirit of fun, excitement, adven- ture and community engagement at the heart of the cadet movement. Sixty specially selected cadets will be
embarking on a unique expedition to Lesotho in southern Africa during which they will work with orphans and vul- nerable children through HRH Prince Harry’s charity, Sentebale. Dozens more are challenging themselves on treks and expeditions to locations as diverse as the Himalayas, Nigeria, the Italian Dolomites, Peru, the USA, Kenya and Namibia. Back in the UK there are competitions
showcasing first aid and a wide array of sports, as well as a special residential camp for cadets participating in The Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award. •
