BUILDING SCHOOLS FOR THE FUTURE UTURE – Maintaining Standards
the facility to high standards. The College has contracted a national
Facilities Management provider since 1996. The range of services provided extends from cleaning, janitorial, caretaking, 24 hr security and driving duties.
Neil Thomson, Commercial Development Manager for the college commented: “the whole team was so proud of our brand spanking new facility, there was never a question of failing to invest in its’ upkeep. It is especially important that the aesthetic environment is appealing to both staff and pupils, we feel that this is fundamental to both intake levels and student retention. “The biggest problem we had on the old site was litter. I was closely involved with the Facilities Management tender process; we were determined to manage the litter problem effectively and certainly better than we had previously.” The contract re-awarded to ISS included provision for the purchase of a new Nilfisk RS502 road sweeper to cope
with all outdoor hard surface areas including pavements.
The diesel powered RS502
vacuumated sweeper copes extremely well with litter, even picking up full drink cans and bricks. The pressure washer facility on board is used to clean bin areas, smoking shelters and remove chewing gum and graffiti from hard surfaces.
The sweeper also has the added benefit of a salt spreading accessory. Vigilance is critical when it comes to protecting staff and students against slip risk from ice on roadways and walkways. At the first hint of a frost warning the salt spreader is attached to the sweeper and used to dispense salt evenly across all areas. A flashing beacon and reverse warning beeper assists with health and safety.
The machine is also expected to cope well with the annual problem of leaf fall. A significant number of trees have been planted on the new site although they are unlikely to present a real problem until better established.
Neil Thomson comments on the effect the road sweeper has made on the site: “The machine has had a significant impact on the amount of litter and has been an asset to the college since it arrived. This type of machine is commonly used by councils across the country to maintain roads and public facilities. Although not a cheap option it performs a range of very necessary cleaning tasks. We felt that it was important to use the best equipment to maintain our high standards.” A teacher spokesperson stated: “we have seen a noticeable improvement in the students’ levels of respect for our shiny, litter free buildings. This improved attitude can only assist in our efforts for higher levels of attainment.” Undoubtedly success stories in the Governments drive to raise standards in our schools. Motherwell College is the envy of many Education specialists throughout Europe and rightly so. Tel 01284 763163
