BUILDING SCHOOLS FOR THE FUTURE

NMENT’ D BUDGET

OST

consultant advice ensured low air permeability measures were used to improve the energy performance of the building.

• Natural Daylight – High window heads and continuous ribbon glazing allow daylight penetration deep within the plan. The street provides natural light to the core of the building. Most of the naturally lit spaces are used as teaching spaces.

• The benefit of mechanical ventilation is that, working in conjunction with a BMS, it enables excellent control of the internal environment. The intention is to provide good air-quality suitable for a densely occupied education building of this type.

VERSATILITY UNDERPINS DESIGN All the spaces within the new school are flexible enough to cope with anything the school day requires at present and adaptable enough for any future changes. Versatility underpins the central theme of learning clusters united by an internal street which delivered the ‘wow’ factor the school required. However, as Carmona explains, the very first hand-drawn sketch of the building dictated from the outset its sustainability credentials: “The orientation of the building is something we discussed and decided on from the very first day. By placing each cluster’s main façades on a north/south orientation we have designed in effective solar control measures where necessary and minimised potential afternoon heat gains through west facing fenestration.”

Having persuaded the local authority

that the ‘wow’ factor it sought would be delivered by a higher profile building, Bond Bryan then developed a design that integrated timber cladding (from a renewable source) to particular areas to improve its response to the natural setting. The Joseph Rowntree School is continuing to build a reputation for excellent special needs education. Its autism spectrum disorder students enjoy

ground floor access and a sensory garden while special education needs provision has access to an external roof terrace incorporating areas of sedum, linking staff and other learning facilities to the street. Says Carmona: “The Green Guide was pretty much our Bible when putting the design together. We had a client that was very focused on the green agenda and this is always a driving factor in the education sector. We have to aim high but we also have to design a robust and affordable school. There is a balance to be made.

“Bond Bryan helped to drive the green agenda forward. For example, the BMS, whilst adding cost, through analysis showed it would deliver long-term financial and energy savings. A good BMS reduces quite drastically the energy a building needs to work on a day-to-day basis through the intelligent control of under floor heating and of lighting.

should very quickly pay for itself.” BMS controlled actuators are connected to all high-level windows to support night time cooling, monitoring CO2

Carmona says: “The team have delivered a building within the capital budget limits that were set, that its users appreciate greatly and is a fantastic resource for the staff and students’ sustainability curriculum needs.” www.bondbryan.com
