Fidessa safeguards its power supply with an integrated service from shentongroup

Financial IT firm, Fidessa PLC, has ensured that it will not face potential catastrophe caused by a blackout or power surge by using the services of the shentongroup to provide it with standby generators, generator maintenance as well as air conditioning.

A leading supplier of multi-asset trading, portfolio analysis, decision support, compliance, market data and connectivity solutions for firms involved in trading the world’s financial markets, it was imperative that Fidessa ensured that it could continue to operate effectively in the event of a powercut. Aware that its existing, single standby generator was insufficient for its needs, Fidessa’s Global Head of ITS, David Awcock, turned to the shentongroup’s Scorpion Power Systems for a solution. Following an in depth survey of Fidessa’s UK headquarters in Woking by Scorpion’s engineers, it became apparent that there were three key areas of the site that needed additional power support systems. Each of these facilities has now

been equipped with an appropriately sized standby generator, ranging from 300kVA to 630kVA, so that offices and IT departments are unaffected when power outages occur. A further generator has been supplied to Fidessa’s offices in London.

To ensure consistent and reliable operation of all its generators in the event of a mains power failure, Fidessa has contracted with shentongroup’s Merlin Power Management to provide it with its Powercare Premier generator service contract. Including 365/24/7 maintenance as well as two-scheduled service visits and emergency call out with a guaranteed 4- hour response, the contract also incorporates remote generator monitoring and rapid response refuelling for the Woking generators.

As a result of this work, shentongroup’s air conditioning company, Celtaire, was asked to supply environmental air conditioning for Fidessa’s comms room in London, which is essential to prevent the

build up of static electrical charges that can damage sensitive electrical equipment. With its power lineage, Celtaire was quickly able to understand the power density requirements of the IT equipment and design a solution that not only supports the IT equipment today, but also provides for flexibility and scalability in the future.

Commenting David Awcock, said: “It is very helpful to have an organisation that can provide us with an integrated service that combines the supply of standby generators with maintenance and air conditioning. All three of the shentongroup’s companies have given excellent service and have gone out of their way to accommodate us by carrying out installation work out of hours to prevent disruption to the day to day running of the company”. British Airways uses Power Efficiency

Power Efficiency, the energy procurement and carbon strategy consultancy, has been awarded a contract to help British Airways (BA) reduce energy procurement costs for its UK property portfolio. BA has achieved savings of £850,000 through the improved energy procurement contracts negotiated by Power Efficiency.

Mark Wiles, BA’s compliance property manager, said; “Power Efficiency has only been working with us for a matter of

weeks but it has already helped us to achieve cost savings with our two main energy suppliers. This will make a significant contribution to our bottom line and also gives BA security of energy supply at very competitive rates.

“Consultants from Power Efficiency, working with BA Property Services & Procurement, achieved these savings through contract renewal negotiations with utility companies that had been supplying BA and were also able to offset any upfront

credit security deposit arrangements, an issue facing many businesses at this time where they are required to pay large deposits to renew energy contracts at favourable terms. The team from Power Efficiency worked with STARK (BA’s Utility Bureau Service) to produce information on energy consumption from meters in properties across BA’s portfolio to provide accurate energy usage figures for use in the contract negotiations.” www.powerefficiency.co.uk

Aggreko provides emergency power

Aggreko, the world leader in temporary power and temperature control solutions, provided a rapid emergency solution to Birmingham’s New Street Station when it lost 75 per cent of its power on the morning of Saturday April 24, 2010. Confirming its credentials as a genuine 24/7, 365 days a year operation, Aggreko responded quickly to get the power back on at one of the UK’s busiest rail terminals, despite the challenges of location and accessibility.

Aggreko’s National Rental Centre first took a call from Network Rail on the morning of the incident. The power failure was caused by a flood shorting out switchgear equipment within the

transformer room at Birmingham’s New Street Station. Once all the options had been assessed by Network Rail engineers, it transpired that three 800 kVA generators would be needed to power the station. Previously it had been operating on emergency power supplies – while trains were still running, facilities such as lighting, heating, shops, destination boards and automatic barriers were out of action. As well as the three diesel-powered generators, the project also required the installation of a temporary fuel tank and 1.5 km of cabling. Once equipment began to arrive on site early on Saturday evening, the Aggreko team immediately began installing the generators and established a

safe

working location for the fuel tank, which also

required filling in the small hours. Aggreko was able to provide such a rapid response due to its ongoing contingency planning agreement with Network Rail, which ensures all the relevant paperwork and planning is in place, should a crisis occur.
