CAMPBELL’S SOUP
In the pot this month... perception versus reality:
There’s about to be a seismic shift in the marketing landscape. From a
positioning/PR perspective, the job of marketing is to drive perception, to make people think that your products are better/cooler/ faster than the rest, and that using them will make you more productive/ attractive/successful by implication, depending on the product market.
But this is the Compare the Meerkat, social networking, instant information era. Style over substance won’t cut the muster anymore. Who makes a purchasing decision in isolation?
In the future, reputation will drive perception. Therefore, marketing must drive reputation. We must engage our customers in a real dialogue and get them to be our advocates.

And we must create the media channels to help them. Creating a positive buzz about your company and being able to reach prospects across all outlets, in an organic, viral way, will be the marketing challenge for the coming decade.
This column will be quarterly from now on, as we let others have a go too. If you’d like more regular chatter, check out my blog (
