Technical Meeting

The Shanghai Branch’s 3rd Technical Meeting was held on 20 April 2010, at the offices of DNV Shanghai. Unfortunately the impact of the volcanic eruption in Iceland was felt in Shanghai, when the planned speaker, also from DNV, was grounded in Europe. However, thanks to the support of DNV Shanghai, Mr. Hans Ramsvik, Pre-contract/Market Intelligence, DNV Shanghai Approval Centre, stepped into the breech with a presentation “Quantum –

a container ship for the future” . “Quantum”

is the name of a new container ship concept introduced by DNV. The new concept is based on both technical and market research and innovation and is designed to transport more cargo while using less fuel and with a reduced environmental impact. The meeting was well attended by

representatives of designers, owners, classification societies. During and aſter the presentation, there were active discussions on various technical and market issues which were brought up by the industry. The aim of the Shanghai Branch by such meetings is to keep the industry informed on the activities of the marine & shipping industries, arousing interests of marine professionals, maintaining the

healthy development of the industry, and encouraging continuing professional development. Tis aim was well met by the 3rd Technical Meeting. As a token of appreciation, Mr. Ramsvik

he NSW Section held its 12th AGM on the evening of 3 March, following the March technical presentation in the Harricks Auditorium at Engineers Australia, Chatswood, attended by 10 with Graham Taylor in the chair.

Forensic Analysis of the Wrecks of HMAS Sydney and HSK Kormoran to a joint meeting with

the IMarEST attended by 42 on 3 March in the Harricks Auditorium at Engineers Australia, Chatswood. Tis was the highest attendance at a technical meeting since the move of EA from North Sydney to Chatswood in May 2006, being just headed by Steve Quigley and Rob Tulk’s presentation on Design and Construction of Cutting-edge Vessels in August 2007 with an attendance of 46. Eric Clarke of MAN Diesel & Turbo Australia gave a presentation on Developments in

Marine Diesel Engines to a joint meeting with the IMarEST attended by 31 on 4 April in the Harricks Auditorium at Engineers Australia, Chatswood. Andrew Baglin, PhD student at the University of New South Wales, gave a presentation on

Ship Resistance Reduction Using Super-Hydrophobic Surfaces to a joint meeting with the IMarEST attended by 18 on 5 May in the Harricks Auditorium at Engineers Australia, Chatswood.
