In brief
ATEX/DSEAR Compliance seminar
Compliance with the ATEX directives has been mandatory for new equipment since June 2003, and for existing equipment since July 2006. There is still a great deal of uncertainty surrounding this legislation and its impact on design, testing, certification and operation of equipment in potentially explosive atmospheres for both users and manufacturers. The IMechE’s ATEX/DSEAR Compliance in Bulk Materials Handling seminar will re-visit the legislation and discuss topics that still cause concerns, including; zoning, legal responsibility, old machinery, second hand machines and small vessels. It will also look at the future of ATEX and how it may develop in the coming years.
The seminar takes place on the 24 June at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers based in London. Visit:

Record-breaking deal
Scottish Coal has added 10 CAT 785D off highway trucks to its fleet modernisation program. The deal for 10 units and a 7 year/ 36,000 hour equipment support package represents a total deal value of £23 million. This deal takes Scottish Coal’s investment with Finning on new equipment alone to over £45 million for over 125 pieces of Caterpillar mining equipment since the beginning of 2008. With the first of the 10 CAT 785D off highway trucks set to be delivered by Finning to the Broken Cross Surface Mine in Ayrshire, Scottish Coal will be the first company in the UK to operate the new D- Series version of the very successful Cat off-highway truck. With a major increase in its current hauling capacity to 136 tonnes per load, Scottish Coal will be able to make significant efficiency gains throughout its operations and thanks to a 7 year support deal with Finning they will be confident of running the equipment for the next 36,000 hours to deliver their
required production output.
Commenting on the deal with Finning, Andrew Foster, Scottish Coal managing director said: “With the introduction of the new CAT 785D’s, we are now well on the way to completing what is probably the most comprehensive fleet renewal programme the mining industry in the UK has ever seen.
“In going through the process of determining which manufacturer to help us make this significant step, it has been the ongoing assistance from Finning, the proven performance of Caterpillar products and the support of Cat Financial that has made this whole deal possible. “I personally am very excited about the prospect of welcoming these machines to our mining operation at Broken Cross. However, what is more significant to me is the 7 year support deal that Finning have put together to ensure we get the maximum output from our investment.”
ABP grabs a load
Cargo handling capacity at Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Humber Ports of Grimsby, Immingham, Hull and Goole received a boost following the delivery of two Liebherr A 944 c HD Litronic material-handling machines. The delivery is a first for the Humber ports and represents an investment by ABP of £1 million.
The Liebherr material-handlers have been working successfully at all four Humber Ports. They provide diverse solutions, with highly efficient and consistent handling applications including vessel loading/discharging, stockpile management and vehicle loading. Its adaptability and flexibility means it can handle a wide range of commodities such as dry bulks and packaged cargo, as well as scrap metal and project cargoes.
