Members certified as sustainable
CCC members were among businesses recently honored at a reception at City Hall by the Sustainable Business Network in partnership with the Cambridge Energy Alliance and Cambridge Local First for receiving their Sustainable Business Leader certification: Cambridge Brewing Company, Harvest Co-op, Irving House and Stone Hearth Pizza. The SBLP provides guidance, support and technical assistance to facilitate the “greening” of small and medium-sized locally owned businesses in Massachusetts. Members named “Women to Watch”
Dava Newman, Professor of aeronautics, astronomics and engineering systems at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Livia Racz, Division leader for advanced hardware development at Charles Stark Draper Laboratory Inc. were among the honorees at the Mass High Tech 7th annual Women to Watch event, which recognizes women in tech and life sciences who are go-getters, hard working, inspirational and motivational to their peers. These up-and-comers are continuing to grow and will shape the future of their industries.

Science Festival runs April 24 to May 2
The Cambridge Science Festival starts on April 24 with a burst of color and light as the FREE opening day Science Carnival kicks-off with a laser show at noon at the Cambridge Public Library, 449 Broadway. Don’t miss the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the invention of the laser, followed by 89 booths of hands-on science & technology experiments and demonstrations. East End House receives dual certification
East End House, which is celebrating its 135th anniversary this year, has become the first organization in the country to be dually accredited by the Council on Accreditation (COA) under its new standards for both the overall agency as well as for its Afterschool and Middle School Programs. The Council on Accreditation is an independent not-for-profit international accreditor of the full continuum of community-based social service organizations. Tofias names new Managing Director
CBIZ Tofias, a leading accounting provider with national resources and local decision making, is pleased to announce that Craig Klein, CPA, MBA has been elected Managing Director. Craig is a member of the Tax Group and specializes in working with not-for-profit and education organizations.

Marlowe earns environmental seal
The Hotel Marlowe has become Green Seal certified. It is the first hotel in Massachusetts and only one of 84 in the country to go through this stringent process to reduce its impact on the environment and human health. To qualify, a hotel must demonstrate sustainable practices in waste minimization, reuse & recycling; energy efficiency, conservation & management; management of fresh water resources; waste water management; hazardous substances and environmentally sensitive purchasing. In 2009, the hotel saved 298 adult trees, 580 cubic yards of landfill space, 527,365 kilowatts of electricity or 310 barrels of oil and reduced their carbon footprint by 39 metric tons, equal to removing 31 cars from the roadway.

Member offers communication advice
Could you use a simple formula for “How To Tell Somebody Something They’d Rather Not Hear”? Find it in Where the Heart Listens (3rd ed. January 2010). Author and Parents Forum founder Eve Sullivan will discuss this topic as the invited speaker at the Cambridge Rotary Club on June 3. Eve welcomes inquiries from parent group coordinators, social services directors and human resources managers interested in licensing the Parents Forum curriculum.
