PIXEL CALLING

PIXEL CALLING

PIXEL CALLS LUKE PICKERING, BERYL HOUGHTON KAMERAS LTD IN COVENTRY TO ASK “HOW’S BUSINESS?”

Very quiet! We don’t get many customers through the door at the moment and it hasn’t picked up very much since Christmas. It’s very unpredictable. I think this is mainly down to the recession including the loss of jobs in this area. As we are not located close to the main town centre we don’t seem to get the passing trade that we used to a few years ago.

Price point of sub £100 is going well. Accessories such as memory cards and camera cases are always steady. We fi nd that a lot of shoppers buy a camera from the internet then come to us when they discover that they need the accessories to go with it like camera cases, memory

PIXEL 06 cards etc.

High end equipment seems to have taken a decline, probably due to the recession and the fact that people don’t seem to have the available cash. Digital printing seems to be on the decline. I think this is due to the fact that as people get more aware of digital photography they are storing their photos on their computers at home, posting them on social networks and not bothering to print them anymore. Business has been slow since Christmas, however, I am hopeful that it will pick up in the summer months when people are planning to take their holidays. We fi nd that we benefi t from customers’ ‘last minute rush’

which happened at Christmas - for example, people going on holiday will suddenly realise that they need a camera and then they will come to us right at the last minute. For the future months of business in 2010 it is very diffi cult to forecast because business is just so unpredictable at the moment. In the past we could say that a certain week we could expect ‘x’ amount of takings but at the moment there is no pattern whatsoever. I don’t think that there is very much new innovation/technology in the market at the moment. I think equipment boasting HD capabilities will probably do well as well as 3D technology which seems to be enjoying a

golden age of cinema through to modern icons. The images featured in the exhibition have been specially selected by both Canon and Getty Images Gallery from Getty Images’ archives, to represent both the influential individuals and photographic styles which shaped the decades. In addition to highlighting the changing fashions and faces of Hollywood, the images also offer a unique insight into the changing technology, techniques and styles of portrait photography enabled by the early cameras to the high

resolution professional digital SLRs of today. “The early days of Hollywood showcase the passion and creativity of the photographers of the age, using available technology and processes to capture a split-second magical image which tell a rich story of the subject, the era and even the cinematic style of the day,” commented Getty Images Gallery Director Louise Garczewska. “Every image featured in the exhibit allows us to appreciate the skills of the photographers behind the lens, and share their vision of Hollywood captured at

that moment.” “At Canon we are passionate about empowering people to take stories with our equipment,” said Yuji Shimodate, Director Photo Products Management & Professional Imaging, Canon Europe. “Hollywood is a shining example of story-telling at its greatest and the images which make up this exhibition offer an insight into the more intimate stories behind the icons who made Hollywood great.” The gallery opening hours are

from 9am to 6pm. Monday to Sunday.

boost at the moment. However, that being said, we sold the Fuji W1 3D camera without much success.

I attend Focus every year but I fi nd that Focus is becoming more of a consumer show as opposed to a trade show and seems to now be based on companies selling products rather than showcasing them. I hope that trade picks up for everyone soon and that we fi nally see an end to the recession.
