WHY DID YOU CHOOSE MIDDLESEX UNIVERSITY?
I felt the skills and knowledge of a Mental Health Nurse were of great value in the area in which I work, so I expressed an interest in taking the course to my employers (Barnet Drug and Alcohol Service). My line manager supported my application, as there was an opportunity to be seconded to the course run at Middlesex.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY ARE THE MAJOR SELLING POINTS OF THE COURSE? I would say the opportunity to directly link the practical and theoretical aspects of learning – skills and knowledge are developed from a student’s very first placement. You soon discover that, as well as providing such a valuable service to the public, the profession is continuously developing, and is performed in such interesting work environments.
DID YOU DO ANY PLACEMENTS? As the course is 50% practice placements, I had the opportunity to experience working in several different mental health services.
WHAT WILL YOU DO NEXT? It’s possible to train to become increasingly specialised within modern nursing – I’d like to work in dual diagnosis, which involves treating people with drug and alcohol addiction, with a coexisting mental health disorder.
IS THERE ANYTHING YOU’RE PARTICULARLY PROUD OF? I think people who work in healthcare rarely take the time to step back and look at what they do, as it simply becomes the norm. I’m proud to be able to work with other professionals to directly improve the quality of people’s lives.
