ADULT NURSING

Adult nurses have excellent communication skills as well as the ability to assess complex situations, problem solve, work within and often lead an inter-professional team and care for patients in a variety of practice settings. Adult nurses work with and support patients who will have both acute and chronic conditions as well as being actively involved in health promotion. We will help you to develop the skills required to work in busy, fast paced, pressurised environments both in the hospital and community settings.

The sheer breadth of adult nursing gives you plenty of scope to find an area that really suits you. It's a wide field with real variety and many different career options. There are plenty of opportunities to specialise in the kind of work you enjoy the most.

MENTAL HEALTH NURSING

The key role and challenge in this complex and demanding area of nursing is the ability to form therapeutic relationships with mentally ill clients and their families. We will enable you to develop the excellent communication skills required to manage your clients as well as working along side other professionals such as psychologists, social workers, psychiatrists and GPs to effectively manage the care of your clients.

Many clients are not cared for in hospitals so you may be working in health centres, day hospitals, outpatients departments or in the client’s own home. The range of conditions you will encounter is vast: depression, psychoses, psychological and personality disorders as well as drug and alcohol dependencies.

CHILD HEALTH NURSING

You will be expected to care for children from birth to 18 years of age. You will develop clinical and analytical skills that will enable you to work alongside other healthcare professionals to provide seamless and supportive care to children, young people and their families in need. Children’s nursing requires you to be intuitive and sensitive to their needs as well as having the skills to support their siblings and parents.

The children's nursing curriculum is grounded in national guidelines and Government directives. Our specialist teaching staff have a wide variety of experience and expertise within neonatal nursing, emergency nursing, child and adolescent mental health and general children's nursing. You can expect to care for children who might have asthma, learning difficulties, who are going to surgery, and also young people who have been self harming amongst many others conditions.
