bit as the main body of the fleet made
the turn. The wind, still from the south,
was increasingly puffy on the north side
of Alki as a result of the bluffs of West
Seattle. The reach to the mark demanded
focused tactics to stay in the shifting puffs
and experienced boats gave a wide berth
and ultimately hoisted jibs to finish.
Shortening the race was the best call,
all racers later agreed. The wind was
easing; as it was, several boats struggled
to round Alki before the wind abated so
they abandoned their races.
Spirits were high with those racers
who did gather in Anthony's back in Des
Moines. A day that had started with light
air - casting doubt on if there would be a
race at all - finished with a race, no rain,
and a spectacular sunset.
