Goblins, ghosts & bulbs!
On a spectacular, sunny and warm October day, two dozen members from businesses large and small volunteered for the CCC’s fourth Community Service Day at the Cambridge Cemetery. Since it was the day before Halloween, some participants dressed in festive garb from bunny ears to witch hats and howled their way through the work with their teammates.

Thousands of bulbs were planted in a two-hour time frame that will help the limited and dedicated City of Cambridge crew at the cemetery to continue their ambitious beautification program. They truly appreciated the CCC’s efforts to help plant in areas that will be highly visible by visitors to the cemetery. When the bulbs planted this fall bloom into flowers this spring, we will share more photos demonstrating the very real impact of this volunteer endeavor.

Participants from Cambridge Savings Bank, Cambridge Trust, Liberty Mutual, and more celebrated their efforts with food donated by Broadway Gourmet and lots of Halloween treats. We encourage you to participate in our annual spring community service day in May 2010. It’s a great way to do team building as well as contribute to making Cambridge a better place to work, live and rest in peace!

Community Outreach Committee launches “1 in 365”
The CCC Community Outreach Committee launched a year-long campaign, “1 in 365” on October 6. The campaign’s focus is to bring Cambridge businesses together in partnership with youth. Just one action in the next 365 days will enable a company to be counted as a participant in this year’s Cambridge Challenge campaign. The Cambridge Challenge is a citywide initiative to increase the number of meaningful connections between the businesses and youth of Cambridge.

At Microsoft’s New England Research and Development Center, the audience of over 50 Cambridge business professionals learned that it takes only a twenty minute commitment as a guest speaker at a youth program to be counted as part of the Cambridge Challenge. Opportunities for businesses to engage with the city’s talented youth can range from a single short term commitment such as that, to a longer term commitment of hiring a student for an after-school or summer job or mentoring a youth during the school year.

Attendees heard from a variety of speakers from the business community who described their experiences connecting with young people and the impact it made on their organization and in the life of the youth. Mayor E. Denise Simmons, along with Community Outreach Committee Co-chairs Sue Walsh from the City of Cambridge Office of Workforce Development and Lori Cowles of HMFH Architects hosted the program with sponsors Susan Lapierre of Cambridge Savings Bank and Lauren Day of Microsoft.
Cambridge students involved in summer internships at Cambridge Innovation Center and in tutoring programs offered through Cambridge School Volunteers spoke powerfully about their experiences as well. Additionally, the 43 employers who hired youth during the school year and summer of 2008-2009, making the highest level of commitment to the Cambridge Challenge, were recognized by Mayor Simmons.

To find out how you and your business can get involved and to see a list of opportunities and the impact they can make on the life of a youth, visit the Cambridge Challenge Web site at www.cambridgechallenge.org or e-mail challenge@cambridgechamber.org.
