Catering & Nutrition
Practical
inspiration for
school menu
planning
Today’s school meal providers face an ever-wider array of
challenges, from increasing uptake of meals and snacks to
ensuring that menus are nutritionally balanced according to
School Food Trust recommendations. Yet the fundamental task
remains the same – to provide interesting, wholesome meals,
each and every day, that pupils will choose and enjoy.
It’s an increasingly tall order, and school caterers need all the
practical help they can get. Mars Foodservice were amongst the
first suppliers to recognise the support required and, after a
comprehensive programme to match their products to the new
nutritional guidelines, now offer a range of sauces perfectly
suited to the demands of school catering.
Trish Smith, Mars Foodservice Marketing Manager explains:

in two main areas. Obviously helping to
meet the new nutritional standards is
extremely important to us. Not only have
we taken steps to ensure our products are
within the 2010 FSA salt guidelines, but
many of our sauces are already within the
2012 targets.
“We’re also very aware that to encourage
uptake of meals the food served has to be
interesting and deliver great taste.

sauces are made
from the finest ingredients, including fresh
herbs, and contain no artificial colourings,
flavourings or preservatives, so they are as
good as kitchen-made – but easier on skill
and time demands.”
An extensive development project just
completed by the company, specifically in
the education sector, has demonstrated that

sauces, and a little know-how, a school kitchen can produce hundreds of different dishes,
and a single jar of sauce can serve up to 75 portions when carefully extended. “Ours is a premium quality product, which when
used properly needn’t mean a premium cost” says Trish. “Versatility is the key.”
At a time when skill levels across school kitchens vary enormously, and time pressures are consistent for everyone, Uncle Ben’s

sauces offer a solution for all. Excellent quality products that are tailored to school catering needs, save kitchen
time and help with budget control. They’re practical, they’re quality, they’re economical and they taste great!
