Beginning students receive instruction in the use of the coal burning forge, anvil, and re-
lated tools. Fundamental techniques developed throughout the course are, drawing out,
upsetting, punching, and splitting and twisting. Students become familiar with hardening
and tempering of the tools, and basic forge welding techniques. Projects to be completed
include punches, chisels, and tongs. Other projects are coordinated with the development
of basic techniques. Lectures include shop safety and the use of related power tools.
Eye protection is required, and hearing protection and heavy boots are recommended.
