‘THE ECONOMIC SITUATION DOESN’T APPEAR TO HAVE AFFECTED BUSINESS TOO MUCH. IF ANYTHING, PEOPLE ARE LOOKING TO SET UP THEIR OWN BUSINESSES IF THEIR JOBS AREN’T SECURE.’

CARLA CANNON

Patrick said: ‘One of the UK’s largest car dealership networks asked us to cater for over 1,000 people in a single day. If that wasn’t enough, all the food had to be 80’s themed and delivered to 10 different locations across Scotland - all within 90 minutes.

‘It took a lot of planning, but we pulled it off. Their only complaint was that there was too much food, which is the kind of complaint we like to hear.’

As ever, Patrick is passionate about his sales and marketing activities with many more PR stunts and competitions planned for 2009. He’ll be visiting New Start Scotland for inspiration.

He added: ‘I always find New Start Scotland to be a great event with plenty of prospects for business. It’s also a great place to network, particularly considering the calibre of businesses that exhibit and attend.’

CARLA CANNON - WYN RESEARCH The past three months have proved a busy time for Carla Cannon and her new business Wyn Research. Despite the economic downturn, the firm’s turnover has been constantly increasing - doubling from October to December.

Carla said: ‘The economic situation doesn’t appear to have affected business too much. If anything, people are looking to set up their own businesses if their jobs aren’t secure.

‘With SMEs, it’s important that they know exactly how their budget should be spent. The research and marketing we provide enable businesses to see what they should be doing, what they should be cutting back on and even to identify possible areas that could be taking advantage of.’

Carla has seen an increase in clients looking for competition research and customer satisfaction as more companies put an increased effort into retaining current clients.

And as with many businesses, Carla has been looking into diversifying and adding to what her company currently offers.

She said: ‘We have been focussing on developing our service offerings and establishing flexible packages for different requirements and budgets. We’ve also got a new website launching soon.

‘Our consultancy service has proved a popular option as many business owners find themselves working in their business and not working on it, which is vital to progressing and taking business to the next level.

‘There’s too much doom and gloom just now but opportunities are out there. New Start Scotland is a great opportunity to bring support for entrepreneurs under one roof. I’m looking forward to the seminars and getting to meet people that may be able to assist me in my business.’
