Yoga for special kids

Integrative Wellness in
Mt. Kisco now offers
customized yoga programs
for special needs students.
The program aims to teach
gentle yoga movements and
breathing techniques for
increasing body awareness,
improving alignment, reduc-
ing anxiety and facilitating
socialization. Classes will
be taught by yoga teacher
Dorothy Gulla and occu-
pational therapist and Reiki
master Anne Bentzen. Both
hope to help students expe-
rience the calming effects of
coordinating simple movements with breath work while sitting,
standing and lying down.
The program was designed with an understanding of the
physiological limitations, language impairments and sensory-
motor difficulties of special needs students. Instructors say
that even the simplest yoga poses can help these students to
improve their strength, balance and flexibility while lowering
the anxiety that many feel as a result of language impairments
and dysfunctional sensory and/or digestive system complica-
tions.
Six Special Needs yoga classes will be offered for $95 as
follows: Tuesdays, September 15 through October 20 from
9:30 to 10:15 a.m., for preschoolers; Thursdays, September
17 through October 22 from 3:30 to 4:15 p.m., for children
K-4; and Thursdays, September 17 through October 22 from
4:30 to 5:30 p.m., for youth grades 5 through 12. Class size
will be limited in order to provide individual support to all
attendees.
