How to
Crochet
This step by step guide will get you on the
road to crochet in no time. Here we show you
how to get started and work the basic stitches.
GrippinG your hook
Pencil grip
As the name suggests you hold the hook as if it
were a pencil. Some hooks have a flat area where
it is naturally comfortable to hold the hook, if your
hook doesn’t, grip it in your fingers approximately
2in (5cm) from the hook end.
Knife grip
Hold you hook as if you were holding a knife as
if to cut something, gripping it 2in (5cm) from the
hook end (or the flat area). The blunt end sits in
the palm of your hand.
Pencil grip Knife grip
Forefinger hold Middle finger hold
holdinG the yarn
Letting the yarn slide through your fingers will help
to keep an even tension.
Forefinger hold
Bring the yarn up between your little and ring finger
to the palm side, then over the ring and index
finger, then behind and over the fore finger. The
ridge where you nailbed meets the cuticle acts as a
natural groove for the yarn to glide over.
Middle finger hold
Take the yarn between the little and ring finger from
the palm side to the back of the hand. When you
start crocheting, raise the middle finger to guide the
yarn. The ridge where you nailbed meets the cuticle
acts as a natural groove for the yarn to glide over.
