At home with Claire
We pop in to visit Claire Montgomerie in her
laire’s studio is nestled away in
beautiful, sunny home studio to talk about
crochet, toys and writing books.

and is one of the first areas you see
when you walk in. Filled to the brim
with inspiring crochet toys and garments this
is somewhere that anyone with a love of fibre
crafts would feel right at home.
The author of many books on knitting
and crochet, Claire graduated with an MA in
Constructed Textiles from the Royal College of
Art and produces her own successful eclectic
range of accessories, toys and garments under
the name of Monty. She teaches knitting and
crochet as well as taking pleasure in drawing
and sketching which has led to a healthy
obsession with trying to translate her drawings
into knitted products.
Claire’s toys have the charm of an old familiar
childhood possession, as each is made from
a variety of vintage fabrics, beads, buttons and
oddments of threads and yarn. Most are missing
limbs, eyes or features, and some threadbare.
Claire also works part time for Loop, a
luxurious yarn store in Central London who sell
a range of her lovely toys. As if she needed
anything else to keep her busy when she is
not crocheting, Claire sews and knits both by
