my summer vacation
Here comes the sun (fun).
No more teachers, no more books; hey school’s out. Seems like even today
that old rhyme still rings in my ear at this time of the year. I have visions of
going off camping, fishing and stoking the old campfire. Those were the days-
when my family would trek off for summers deep in the woods of Canada. Ahh,
those visions of horrific lighting storms, swollen ankles from excessive
mosquito bites and smelly latrines (to this day I can still hold my breath for
three minutes)…they weren’t even up to the level of a port-a-john. But still, a
great vacation, for a five year old. There were no showers or baths. You bathed
in the lake, use ivory soap, cause it floats.
Dad & Me
So those were great times George? You bet
they were! Even though still up to this day
my sisters and I all have different versions
of our family summer vacations. Growing up
in a modest household, with strong values, the family holiday was not five star by
any means. Collectively, what truly mattered was we did an activity as a family unit.
Sure, we hear and read, times are tough now, but, times were tough then too. It
doesn’t matter what the headlines say, when times are tough and you are
experiencing it, it is a rough go for you. But don’t stop reaching for the new
experiences. Keep moving, press on and don’t miss this special time of year.
So what made it so memorable for me, aside from the Chevy Chase adventure-
style of vacationing? Definitely that we were in it together. Good, bad or otherwise Dad, Alan & Me
we enjoyed the simple experiences. Maybe it was the combination of Cumbaya
campfire sing-a-longs and the fresh caught fish from the lake smoking on the fire.
Can you imagine what we all smelled like going to church on Sundays? Yes, we still had to go to church! And I
thought we were on vacation!
This issue I’m dubbing the issue of fun, so no matter where you are right now, jump in & take away something good
for you, your family and friends to do this summer. You will look back and say, the summer of 2009 was a great year.
Just how long can you hold your breath?
As always, you have my best. Enjoy the summer! George
