“Women & Spirit” showcases the legacy of American nuns
On April 30, 2011, the 28th Annual Children’s Charity Dinner honored three San Diego community leaders. “Women & Spirit: Catholic Sisters in America,”
a touring exhibition celebrating the historical and cultural contributions of U.S. religious, will arrive in Los Angeles this summer. The exhibition features 70 artifacts from more
than 400 orders including a letter from Thomas Jefferson assuring the religious freedom of teaching sisters in Louisiana. The exhibition also honors advances made by religious in non- traditional fi elds, such as Sister Miriam Stimson, OP, whose scientifi c research led to the discovery of DNA, and Sister Ignatia Gavin, CSA, who successfully argued for the medical treatment of alcoholism. St. Mary’s College in Los Angeles from June 19 to August 14. Father Joe will lead a special guided bus tour that includes a stop at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. It’s a great opportunity to see the cathedral through Father Joe’s eyes and to experience its famous Belgian tapestries. Lunch will be provided. ■
