Connected vehicle functions could be a major
factor in reducing greenhouse gases,
as AMY ZUCKERMAN reports
Throughout this past winter’s acrimonious debate
about ways to boost the United States’ faltering econ-
omy, Congress focused a great deal on rebuilding
the nation’s crumbling roads, bridges and tunnels.
Virtually absent from the fraught Congressional and
Obama Administration negotiations over the
US$790billion recovery package was any note of the
many technologies that can reduce traffic jams. These
technologies - which range from advanced traffic sig-
nals to the dedicated short-range communication
(DSRC) transponders and readers that underlie elec-
tronic toll collection and more - received nary a mention
in the mainline media. The emerging world of the con-
nected vehicle wasn’t even on the media’s radar
screen.
And yet, experts from Federal agencies, the automo-
tive industry and electronics and navigation companies
that both develop and support these technologies,
agree that the emerging connected vehicle has a huge
potential to help mitigate the greenhouse gas emissions
that international scientists believe cause global warm-
ing. Besides which, they say many technologies are

under development for use in prototype cars, while ear-
lier technologies that rely on the networked vehicle,
combined with navigation devices and wireless com-
munication, are available for use for drivers of cars and,
more to the point, are available right now.
