Lifetime Leadership Award
M. Monica Sweeney, MD, MPH
D
r. Monica Sweeney is the Assistant Commissioner for the Bureau of
HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control at the New York City Department
of Health and Mental Hygiene. For more than 17 years, she served as the
Medical Director and Vice President of Medical Affairs at the Bedford
Stuyvesant Family Health Center, where she made tremendous strides in
bringing quality care to the people in Brooklyn.
Dr. Sweeney is presently serving as an associate professor at the
Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education at the City University of New
York Medical School and as an assistant professor of medicine at the School
of Public Health of the State University of New York Downstate Health
Science Center of Brooklyn.
In addition to clinical medicine, teaching and policy advocacy, Dr.
Sweeney is the face of HIV/AIDS prevention in the media. She has appeared
on every major television channel, and many of the most popular radio
stations, discussing HIV prevention. Dr. Sweeney is also the recipient of
numerous awards from professional, civic and government groups, including
The Public Health Advocate Award from the Public Health Association of
New York City for her outstanding contributions and advocacy for public
health improvements, the New York Post’s Liberty Community Medal, and
the Leadership in Urban Medicine award from the Arthur Ashe Institute for
Urban Health. She was named one of The Network Journal’s 25 Influential
Black Women in Business for two consecutive years. Additionally, she served
two terms on the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS and authored
“Condom Sense: A Guide to Sexual Survival in the New Millennium,” a no-
nonsense guide to condom use and sexual health.
Dr. Sweeney received an Associate’s Degree from Bronx Community
College, a Bachelor’s Degree from Columbia University, a medical degree
from SUNY Health Science Center of Brooklyn (Downstate), and a Masters
Degree in Public Health from Columbia University.
