Chilton House undergoes renovations with help from Cambridge community
By Deborah Corkum, VVNA Care Network & Hospice
VNA Care Network & Hospice recently embarked on a $1.8 million capital campaign to renovate Chilton House, the state’s first hospice home for the terminally ill, as well as establish a patient care fund.
The converted two-family residence has touched the lives of more than 2,000 people since it opened in Cambridge’s Huron Village in 1991. Chilton House offers a homelike setting for terminally ill patients to live and receive hospice, a combination of physical, emotional, practical and spiritual support. Loved ones also receive support, and care helps both patients and families focus on life.
VNA Care Network & Hospice is being supported in this effort by Cambridge business people and residents. Members of the Chilton House Campaign Cabinet include Elaine Arsenault, branch manager of Cambridge Trust Company; Carol M. Cerf; Robert S. Hurlbut; Janet M. Kinasewich; Sally V. Lesser; Carol VanDeusen Lukas; LuAnn S. Polk; Joseph V. Roller, president and CEO of Cambridge Trust Company; Joanna C. Scott; Elizabeth T. Snyder; Patricia A. Thornton; and Susan Roosevelt Weld.
Donations to the Chilton House capital campaign will be used to expand from four to five bedrooms, each with a private bath; add nurses stations on the first and second floors; enlarge the living area; make other updates and renovations to offer even more comfort for patients and loved ones; and establish a patient care fund for grief and bereavement services, provision of hospice care for those in need and maintenance of the residence and grounds.
VNA Care Network & Hospice is working with Cambridge businesses Chan Mock Architects and S+H Construction to achieve its vision of a peaceful, comfortable, homelike setting for those nearing the end of life. The crew has already gutted the interior of the home and is preparing for drilling geothermal wells and excavating for an addition and elevator shaft.
