The National Centre for Social Research (NatCen) is an independent, non-profit social research
organisation. It has a large professional staff together with its own interviewing and coding resources.
Some of NatCen’s work – such as the survey reported in this book – is initiated by NatCen itself and
grant-funded by research councils or charitable foundations. Other work is initiated by government
departments or quasi-government organisations to provide information on aspects of social or economic
policy. NatCen also works frequently with other institutes and academics. Founded in 1969 and now
Britain’s largest social research organisation, NatCen has a high reputation for the standard of its work in
both qualitative and quantitative research.
